Pregnancy, Parenthood, and Pediatrics: Advancing Mental Health for Women & Children
Jan. 17, 2026 Tucson, AZ
Presented by the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Arizona and Banner – University Medical Center, this symposium will focus on educational topics to advance mental health for women and children. With an alarming shortage of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and other mental health specialists, for perinatal and pediatric patients in need. 1 in 5 women in the U.S. suffer from maternal mental health complications, including postpartum depression and addiction; 1 in 5 youth between ages 3-17 in the U.S. suffer from an emotional, developmental, or behavioral disorder. The mismatch between care need and availability has become even greater. The majority of patients receive psychiatric and behavioral health care from their primary care provider (PCP). However, PCPs often report both lack of time and confidence in diagnosing and treating these conditions. Empowering both primary and behavioral health care providers to better care for perinatal and childhood psychiatric disorders improves associated medical conditions, enhances access to behavioral health care, reduces stigma, and improves community health.
