Celebrating Partnership: Gila River Indian Community's legacy of support for Banner Children's

When members of the Gila River Indian Community (GRIC) board visited Banner Children's at Desert in June, they were greeted with something special—a newly dedicated Book Nook bearing their community's name. The cozy reading space and free library for patients is located in the Banner Children's Blood & Cancer Center. The naming honors GRIC’s longstanding commitment to pediatric care in the East Valley totaling nearly $2 million in grants.

The Book Nook dedication honored GRIC's most recent grant of $395,051 in 2024, which funded the construction and furnishing of five physician offices and a meeting space within the Blood & Cancer Center. But this contribution represents just one chapter in a remarkable story of partnership spanning more than 15 years. Read on to learn how this partnership is transforming pediatric cancer care.

Protect what matters most and support cherished causes
Now's the perfect time to document your wishes

August is Make-a-Will Month —an ideal opportunity to take a meaningful step that protects your loved ones and creates a lasting legacy for the causes close to your heart.

More than half of Americans don't have a will or trust. Without one, the state—not you—decides what happens to your assets. Your thoughtful planning today can spare your family stress, confusion, and legal hurdles when the time comes.

Every adult needs a will, regardless of age or wealth. If you own a home, a car, pets, or other items of value, documenting your wishes brings comfort and clarity when it's needed most. Creating your will is easier than you think—learn how.

Banner is home to America's largest health care K-9 security team

For more than 20 years, Banner Health has been pioneering a unique approach to hospital security—one that combines cutting-edge training with the remarkable capabilities of specialized K-9 officers. Today, our K-9 Security Response Program stands as the largest of its kind in the United States, with more than 30 nationally certified patrol K-9s working alongside dedicated handlers across Arizona and Colorado.

The program's foundation begins overseas, where each dog is carefully hand-selected from European breeders. Belgian Malinois, German Shepherds, Dutch Shepherds, and Belgian Tervurens are chosen not just for their strength, but for their intelligence and temperament—qualities essential for working in sensitive health care environments. Learn how these K-9s are transforming health care security.

Toy toss game scores big at the Play Zone

Special thanks to FC Tucson and Rancho Sahuarita for visiting our youngest patients in the Diamond Children's Medical Center Play Zone in Tucson. During their visit, they organized a stuffed animal toy toss activity in the Play Zone.

Rancho Sahuarita is a master-planned community in Tucson founded in 2001. Managing Partner Jeremy Sharpe serves on the Banner Health Foundation Board of Directors and led the campaign to raise $3.6 million to create the Play Zone at Diamond Children’s Medical Center.

“Thoughtful gestures like this visit by our community partners are meaningful because they show our youngest patients that our community is rooting for them and their healing,” said Andy Petersen, Banner Health Foundation President.

Thank you to the FC Tucson team and everyone at Rancho Sahuarita—your kindness scored a major goal with our patients and families!

Banner Health Foundation and Banner Alzheimer’s Foundation work closely with grateful patients, generous families, businesses, and community supporters to advance the nonprofit mission of Banner Health.
