A gift of gratitude: How one family's NICU experience inspired a generous legacy
Three years ago, Rupa Low, MD , and her husband, Jason Low, MD , experienced every expectant parent's fear when a medical emergency threatened both mother and baby. Today, their story has come full circle with a $50,000 gift to support the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix, a heartfelt thank you for the exceptional care that quite possibly saved their son Henry’s life. It started as an ordinary workday at home for Rupa, a family medicine physician. But when abdominal pain struck and her blood pressure medication couldn't bring down dangerously high readings, she knew something was seriously wrong. At 34 weeks pregnant and suspecting preeclampsia, Rupa woke her husband Jason, an interventional radiologist, in the middle of the night with two simple words: "Let's go."

A celebration of hope: Pediatric Cancer Survivors Day brings joy and connection
When 7-year-old Arnulfo knocked on 24-year-old Esteban 's hospital room door last July, he had a simple message for his friend: "You made me get up yesterday, so you have to do the same today." It was the kind of moment that defines the pediatric cancer journey—not just the medical treatments and clinical milestones, but the unexpected friendships and profound connections that sustain families through their darkest days.
This past June, Arnulfo and Esteban reunited at Banner Children's Pediatric Cancer Survivors Day — read their inspiring story of friendship and resilience.

Stay sun smart this summer
Arizona's abundant sunshine is one of our state's greatest assets, but it also presents significant risks for skin health, which is why UV Safety Awareness Month , observed in July, serves as an important reminder to practice sun safety. Sunburns have long-term health risks, including premature skin aging and skin cancer, including melanoma. These tips can help protect you and your family this summer:
✅ Apply sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to all exposed skin at least 15 minutes before swimming or exercise. Reapply every two hours. ✅ Wear hats, sunglasses and long sleeves to cover your skin. Choose light-colored and loose-fitting clothes for comfort. ✅ Stay in the shade during peak sun hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) when the sun's rays are strongest.

Op-Ed: Medical research hasn't disappeared. It's gone nonprofit
This op-ed by Corey Casper, MD, Chief Research Officer of Banner Health, has been featured across Arizona's leading news outlets, reaching audiences statewide:
• The Arizona Republic (Phoenix)
• Arizona Daily Star (Tucson)
• East Valley Tribune (Mesa)
In this piece, Dr. Casper discusses the critical role nonprofit health systems play in advancing long-term medical research — particularly prevention studies for Alzheimer's disease, cancer, and cardiovascular conditions as federal funding declines and private investment focuses on commercial pathways.
