Honoring the gifts and expertise propelling Alzheimer's care & research

As we observe  Alzheimer's & Brain Awareness Month in June, we celebrate the remarkable generosity of our donors and the dedication of our scientific and medical experts, both of which are accelerating the fight against Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.

A transformative gift paves the way for innovative treatment
An anonymous donor recently made a $250,000 gift, which will enable 10 additional Banner Alzheimer’s Institute patients to access an experimental drug therapy for cognitive decline.

Learn how Allison Perrin, MD and Parichita Choudhury, MD, are helping shape new possibilities for patients and families.

Transformative youth internship program opens door to health care careers

When a high school senior walks through the doors of a Banner Health hospital for their first day as a HEAL intern, they're not just starting a job—they're stepping into a future they might never have imagined.

Thanks to a significant $809,715 grant from Opportunity Now awarded in 2024, Banner Health Colorado has launched the Health Care Education, Advancement, and Leadership (HEAL) Program, a paid internship initiative designed to introduce local youth to the diverse world of health care careers.

Read on to learn more about how HEAL is shaping the next generation of health care professionals.

A treehouse, a graduate, and the ripple effect of kindness

Tatumn Carr walked into the fifth-floor playroom at Banner Children's at Desert on a recent Friday morning and paused. The warm, cozy tree-trunk nook with painted branches extending across walls and ceiling looked exactly as she remembered—except now, she was viewing it through the eyes of a high school senior rather than the eight-year-old girl who helped envision it.

"It was kind of surreal seeing the treehouse again now that I'm about to graduate," Tatumn said, settling into the nook for the first time in a decade. "It's really fulfilling to see that it's been put to such good use—if it helps someone smile or forget about treatments for a few minutes, then that makes me happy."

Phoenix Fire honors Banner Health as Partner of the Year

Two Banner Health physicians received Phoenix Fire Department’s inaugural Partner of the Year award for their role in a life-saving ice bag immersion protocol transforming emergency response to heat stroke across the Valley.

Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix toxicologist Jerry Snow, MD , and emergency medicine physician Aneesh Narang, MD , were recognized for their three-year collaboration with Phoenix Fire’s emergency medical services team on the rapid-cooling protocol.

Heat stroke is a life-threatening condition that requires rapid recognition and immediate intervention. Cold water immersion remains the most effective cooling method, and Phoenix Fire implemented the specialized immersion bag protocol in 2024 developed with Banner physicians.

The collaboration exemplifies Banner Health's commitment as a nonprofit health system to reinvest in innovative community health initiatives that save lives. In 2025 alone, Banner provided more than $1 billion in community benefit, funding more than 200 programs serving vulnerable populations across the six states it serves. To learn more, read Banner Health’s 2025 Annual Report below.

Banner Health Foundation and Banner Alzheimer’s Foundation work closely with grateful patients, generous families, businesses, and community supporters to advance the nonprofit mission of Banner Health. Funds are invested locally in our hospitals and medical centers, patient care programs, family and community services, medical education, and research initiatives.
