A core method of therapy for the Banner Children’s Child Life teams, the toy closets provide an opportunity for children treated at Banner to select a toy to have and take home with them to aid in their recovery. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), play can help to better understand the child’s experiences and to “reduce the intensity of negative feelings accompanying a child’s admission to hospital and hospitalization.” The NIH further states that play is “proven to be of high therapeutic value for ill children, thus contributing to both their physical and emotional well-being and to their recovery.”

Children hospitalized for treatment are experiencing continued restrictions this year based on COVID-19 protocols, limiting personal contact with family and loved ones. Our traditional volunteer processes would lead to purchasing, gathering and delivering toys. Our virtual approach reduces risk, improves time to patient experiences and helps our most precious resource – our children- benefit and feel the generosity and compassion Lumen employees have in our hearts!
