December 9th marks the 10th anniversary of the gift card drive my parents and I started in honor of my brother Matt’s birthday. Matt would be turning 31 this year, and I’ve decided it’s time to bring back this tradition that has meant so much to our family.

For those of you who don’t know the backstory, here’s a little glimpse into where it began: When Matt was undergoing treatment—chemo and radiation—one of the few bright spots in his day was the treasure box at the nurse’s station. This treasure box was filled with toys and small items that patients could choose from after their treatment. That simple gesture meant so much to him.

But Matt quickly noticed that the items weren’t really geared toward older kids who were also going through treatment. So, in true Matt fashion—selfless and thoughtful even while fighting his own battle—he and my mom created their own version of the treasure box. They donated it to the Diamond Children's Medical Center, hoping to bring joy to kids his age who needed a reason to smile.

Over the years that we hosted this fundraiser, we raised over $3,000. After my dad passed away, it became difficult to continue the tradition without him, and like many things, it was quietly set aside. But this year feels different. It feels right to honor Matt’s memory—and both of my parents’ legacies—by bringing this tradition back to life.

In honor of Matt’s birthday and my parents’ love of giving during the holidays, we are once again raising funds to collect toys for older kids (especially ages 10 and up)—items that will bring a little joy and comfort during the holiday season.
